About Chess Rabbits

Chess Rabbits is an chess education program in New York City. It is dedicated to making the game intellectually rich and aims to be creatively engaging. Chess Rabbits was founded by Phil Rosenberg. It blends two distinct worlds. The energy of the city’s legendary Washington Square Park chess scene, and Phil’s 20 plus years of professional teaching experience. Phil discovered early on that chess has the power to connect people across backgrounds. He saw the game’s ability to bridge generations. He has spent his career turning that insight into a mission; helping kids and adults grow through the game.

Many Hats

With more than two decades of experience as a chess tutor and coach, Phil has taught in many different environments. He has instructed in schools, after-school programs, and private chess lessons. Additionally, he has taught at community clubs across New York City. He studied at SUNY Stony Brook, CUNY Brooklyn, and H.B. Studios, and has also explored media and communication, hosting the Phil Rosenberg Show and working in radio. This broad background shapes his unique teaching style. In his classes, chess is not only about winning games, it’s about building creativity, confidence, and critical thinking skills. Phil specializes in 1-on-1 coaching for kids, with a particular strength in working with neurodiverse students, especially those with ADHD. His patient, engaging approach helps every child thrive by channeling energy and curiosity into structured, creative learning.

What makes Chess Rabbits lessons different is the philosophy behind them: chess is more than memorizing openings or grinding tactics. Every session—whether in person in NYC or through online chess lessons via Zoom—is designed to be intellectually challenging, analytically indispensable, and above all, fun. Students are encouraged to think deeply, problem-solve creatively, and take pride in their progress. Through private tutoring and group classes, Phil and Chess Rabbits have built a community of curious young thinkers. Passionate players who see chess not only as a game, but view it as a lifelong adventure, will find a home here.
